My Story

How I went from a battle-scarred corporate warrior to a successful self-employed Freelance Digital Marketer.

It was not that long ago that I was sitting right where you are reading something like this and wishing that were me.

It also was not long ago that I was at a major crossroads in my life.

Looking back at that time, it felt like I was on a speeding train that was taking me farther away from my ‘youth’.

I was an a job that was comfortable and secure from the outside, but to me was feeling more and more like a cement block tied around my feet as I slowly drowned in a sea of deadlines and quarterly reviews.

I was in a dead-end job. A job that was made up of all the things my peers did not want to do. A job that was ridiculous because of the breadth of its responsibility and lack of authority. A job that I felt was the target of people’s ridicule, especially as the company was getting younger while, I, the aging dinosaur lumbered around trying to stay relevant.

Of course, these were all my perceptions… but our perceptions are our reality.

So, I was carrying this baggage around in my head all day, every day.

Worst of all, I was not handling any of this particularly well.  I did not have a strong game when it came to my mindset.

So, how did I get to this point?

I have been blessed to have great jobs since my early twenties. Soon after I started my first job out of college, my career really took off.

I had been rapidly promoted all through the first 10-15 years. The work was meaningful. I liked the people I worked with. I took pride in the company I worked for and the value I added to the company.

Having children changed my outlook on life.

My values changed… although I did not know to think of it in those terms at the time.

I loved the heck out of my kids (still do). My kids became my highest value and primary purpose of being.

The career growth naturally slowed down.

Of course, I am not blaming my kids for what happened. I wish I had the tools back then that I do now so I could have dealt with the situation in a better way.

In hindsight, I wish I had a mentor or two who may have told me that what was happening to me was due to a choice I made.

Therefore, it was OK to accept it, or it was also OK to change course and that I had the power to change it.

In the absence of all that, I let my frustration take over… started to blame the company, my many managers (the company was also going through a lot of change) and I felt adrift.

However, I was afraid to make any changes to the status quo because I did not want to lose the perception of ‘security’ that a job gives us. This vicious cycle ultimately led to a loss of inspiration for my work.

I was bringing all that stress home and it was a vicious circle that was getting worse each day.  I.WAS.DESPERATE.FOR.CHANGE

Finally, in my desperation, the only feasible solution I could think of was to exit the situation I was in…. and I QUIT.

Cold Turkey…

Of course, I made a financial plan but really had no firm idea as to what came next.

It was around this time that I came across an ad on YouTube. It caught my attention immediately.

It was about this guy that turned his life around by leveraging the internet.

Now… I can almost see the eyes rolling and hear the groans… “Guy on the internet, really??”

Yes. Really!

He was talking about a training academy he had set up to teach people the skills required to become Freelance Digital Marketers. His presentation made logical sense.

I downloaded the information and read through his material. It still made sense.

I signed up for a 2-hour masterclass with the man himself. His name is Keala Kanae, by the way. It made more sense once I saw him doing the stuff he had been talking about.

I was blown away by the possibilities that exist online. He had listed proven methods and strategies to get started.

But…. the skeptic that I am, I had to do my research.

As far as I could tell, this was a legit training program. It was not one of those ‘get rich quick’ schemes, he wasn’t a guru selling fake systems.

I signed up soon after.

After going through the training program, I was sure. The training stands out for its level of detail and course design that makes it almost impossible to give up midway.

I implemented the step-by-step process they teach you and now I have a business which is growing, and I have already seen results.

A HUGE bonus (and the secret weapon I have acquired, to be honest) is the training and mentorship around developing the right mindset to be successful in business and indeed in life.

That has been invaluable and has helped me address some of my deep-rooted fears and insecurities.

I am still on the entrepreneurial journey.

But when I look at the road ahead, I feel more confident, inspired, and grateful because I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

I have realized how important it is for me to model happiness for my kids by being happy in what I am doing.

The support, mentors and new friendships have been amazing.
